Posted - 11 Sep 2009 : 19:36:06 Hi,
A friend of mine has been following a diet from a website (silly i know)that promotes a high protein diet as he his trying to gain weight as muscle mass with the attention of getting as large as he can.
This Diet he found says that by reducing the amount of insulin in the body will promote an increase in the human growth hormone - he is convinced that carbs are bad and counts every gram possible and is convinced this diet is working! I don't know alot about the effects of a high protein diet but know that cutting out a major food group is just rediculous and following diets from an unqualified beef cake is not a good idea!!
Does anyone have any interesting takes on this re low insulin / growth hormone and the negative effects of a high protein diet?
Personally i think he is ignorant to proper advice and has no interest in listening to me!
Interested to know ! |

Posted - 19 Dec 2009 : 17:46:32 Wouldnt this type of doet work though surely as if the body is not in a state of glycosis using glycogen for energy sources then it will be in a state of ketosis which is utalising fats as a primary source of energy, thus if you dont have a high enough calorie intake then surely the body will utalise its own fat stores as energy thus losin bdy fat at the same time as keepin its muscle stores!
Obvioulsy with this type of diet you would have to use good fats and not bad fats as this could/would do more harm than good but its just like carb cycling which is another good way of droppin fat for the body as well.

It really frustrates me when people follow drib drab diets and think they are experts on the topic!! Old habits die hard i suppose - hopefully he'll check out your website!

Posted - 12 Sep 2009 : 23:19:26 That is rubbish and he will not gain muscle mass that way. I advise top level international pro bodybuilders. GH and insulin are both anabolic hormones and most bodybuilders try little tricks to incease insulin - insulin buts carbs into the muscle to increase performance and may also increase the opportunity for muscles to take up more protein.
A sister site to this one which I also run is www.MuscleTalk.co.uk - point your mate there and get him to post up his diet.
