Thanks for all your help jd87, especially in relation to the places to avoid. I'll be 27 when starting the course so the last thing I want is to live in a noisy area....god I'm showing my age now!!

I studied Human Nutrition and I loved it there. Would have gone back in a heartbeat! Are you going into Postgrad or Undergrad? When I was studying, Hum Nuts and Dietitians all studied together, so the classes are big enough, however they generally group people in their own class for projects etc, so you should be able to meet people easily enough.

Hi jd87,

Yea there the ones I'm talking about, that sounds pretty good!! My main thing is to live with people who are around my age because I will be 25 and you know wont know anyone so want to have some sort of social life up there ha! What did you study up there?
Thanks, Faye

Is that Agherton Village? I've never been in them but I've heard they are nice. They are literally right beside Tesco and you have a bus stop on your front door too. The university is about a half hour walk, and there's a cycle path if you have a bike.
I stayed in Cranagh Halls in my first year. They were nice and very handy for the uni, but you're not near any shops, and they are generally reserved first years.

Thanks so much indulgentfoodie and Jd87!!!

The only other one I know is spareroom.co.uk, however I'm not sure how useful it would be for finding accommodation in that area. It's worth a try though!

I know exactly what you mean about finding accommodation when you don't know anywhere. I'm trying to do the same myself at the moment.

As a guide - most of the students live on a road called Lisadell Avenue and it's a real mix of undergrads, postgrads professionals and families.

One thing I will say is that if you're looking for something quieter, I would advise you to be wary of houses in Old Mill Grange and Millstone (Park, Avenue, Drive etc.) - these estates are generally occupied by undergrad students and can be very noisy and dirty.

Apart from that, you shouldn't be able to go too far wrong. Let me know how you get on or if you have any other questions!

Hi jd87,

Thank you so much for all that info. It is quite a daunting task finding accomodation in an area you know relatively little about so any information is greatly appreciated.

Do you know of any websites similar to gumtree etc for accomodation with professionals?
jd87 Posted - 16 May 2012 : 13:19:11
Hi Faye and IndulgentFoodie! I did my undergrad in Ulster so I know a fair bit about the acommodation up there.

You can go into Halls on campus and as far as I know, the university tries to place postgrads in flats together, however the majority of students live in Portstewart. It's about 3miles from the campus and has very good bus links - plus, you're right beside the beach!

Accommodation in Portstewart is normally very good quality because the houses are mainly holiday homes. There are two main letting agencies that supply to students - North Coast Property Management and LPG. Google these to get the websites. You can normally rent single rooms in shared houses through them.

If you want to rent with other dietetic students, you should email the course director and ask for contact details of other students on the course - send an email round and see if anyone wants to share (I know somebody who did this last year). You shouldn't have too much bother finding accommodation because there is always a surplus.

If you want to know any more, just hit me back on this!

Hi Faye,

I have tried to look into this too. Unfortunately it seems gumtree or daft are not frequently used in Coleraine/Portstewart to advertise spare rooms. As far as I am aware most people live in Portstewart (about 3-4km away from campus) and most rooms in houses are let on an individual basis by estate agents. I think you can call the estate agents and let them know that you will only be willing to live with other postgrad students or professionals and in return they will provide you with a list of available suitable houses.

I know somebody who lives in Derry city who may be able to give me some more information on how to look for accomodation in Coleraine/Portstewart and will let you know as soon as I find out.

It really is Faye, the last few months waiting and constantly checking emails and on postman watch have been terrible, so it's such a relief that it is finally over.
faye2 Posted - 17 Apr 2012 : 12:11:16
yeah there is only 19 for the ug this year so that seems small so maybe,

congrats again what an amazing feeling!!!!
IndulgentFoodie Posted - 17 Apr 2012 : 11:59:58
Thanks Faye!!

From what I gather the classes are quite small so I'd imagine our paths will definitely cross! Perhaps we may even have some classes together
