So it's getting close to that time when everyone has to start applying for student finance. I'm just attempting to work it all out now and believe the following to be correct;
Tuition fees are paid for by the NHS automatically when you are accepted onto a course. This requires no work from us.
We are eligible to apply for the NHS bursary which is not repayable (http://www.nhsstudentgrants.co.uk/) which for me (supporting myself for 3 years, course length 32 weeks) amounts to £2,974.00
On top of this we are eligible to apply for a topup loan from the SLC (http://www.studentfinance.direct.gov.uk/portal/page?_pageid=153,4680136&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL) which is repayable and that comes to £ 2324.
So overall we/i will receive £5298 which will cover accommodation which will most likely be between £2560 and £3872 leaving between £2738 and £1426 to survive with.
So, If anyone else has worked out theirs how does yours compare? I know that certain universities also offer smaller grants and bursaries to help students but the above should be what every one is entitled to as minimum.
Also, Does anyone know how this would compare to a student not being funded by the NHS? a few people have told me NHS funded courses are better off financially and some seem to think they get less?

In simple terms, yes, students studying on NHS courses are potentially better off, in the long term.

Long term yes due to not having as much actual loan to repay. But short term? How do the Dietetics students fare against the normal degree students?

Short term depends upon the individual. Most students just have the loan. NHS funded students can access both the loan and the bursary. How much you get depends on your situation. But ultimately it's how you budget it. Save, save, save, before you come, so you don't have to do a part time job.

I was told by the student loans company as I'd already had a loan for my first degree I was not eligible for another loan, so I just have the NHS bursary.

Hi I went onto the SLC website and completed the on line calculator to determine what I would be entitled to. It states that I would be eligible for the maintenance loan even though I have completed a degree..would this be because I have children?

You are entitled to funding from the SLC even if you have a first degree. This is the case with any NHS degree as a second degree.
I know this becuase I graduated last year and have had it confirmed with my local SLC that funding is possible.
Hope this helps! |

Thats interesting. SLC told me I wasn't eligible for any other money. Only certain degrees were exempt from this and dietetics wasn't one of them. Will be phoning them asap.
